My Green Smoothie!!!

What the HECK are you drinking?!

(singing) The best part of waking up, is a  Green Smoothie in my cup!
People look at me crazy when I drink my Green Smoothie!!! They ask "what the heck is that?!" Is it good?! Yes it is!! It's extremely yummy but more than anything, it's so healthy for you!
 Here's the ingredients:
A handful of organic spinach
1 Fuji apple
1 Asian Pear (both peeled & cored)
1/2 cup of ice
1 Banana
1 half of a avocado
3 Stalks of celery
1 cup of cold filtered water
1/2 of the juice of a fresh lemon
Fun tip: Be sure to cut the fruit & veggies up SUPER small and blend low to high! If not, it will be a weird texture!
Yes, I even got my "southern" husband to drink these daily!! :)

Ok, you are probably asking WHY do I need to drink this thing & skip breakfast? Yes, I said skip breakfast. Your food is STILL trying to digest from yesterday and then you wake up and eat this huge breakfast that slows down your digestion system even more! By blending all of these fruits and veggies, you "predigest" them, so your body doesn't need to work as hard to break down the food & waste precious energy & enzymes. By blending these fruits you STILL get all of the Fiber (vs. juicing) and this helps strengthen your bowel movements.  So, by drinking this smoothie, you will have MORE energy, you'll still feel full (until at least noon) And if you aren't--you can always eat some fresh fruit, and you are preparing your body to easily digest the REST of your food so you won't be sitting at your desk sluggish by 1pm! I noticed a difference in my skin, I wasn't as "bloaty" after I ate and I am toning in those "hard to reach areas"

So WHY do I love eating healthy & studying my body?! Well, my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20) and I want to honor God with my body. I aint honoring Him if I go to McDonald's everyday. I won't have ANY energy, I won't be able to focus because my body is trying so hard to break down all this garbage. I sure won't have energy to get up and read my bible as I stuff my face with eggs & bacon every morning. I want to go back to sleep! Your BODY is not your own, it belongs to Christ so treat it well, work out, eat healthy, take care of your body so you aren't all sick and tired at 35. If you are sick due to your weight or eating unhealthy it is a DISTRACTION. When something becomes the major focus of life and it isn’t God, it is sin. So to constantly obsess about exercise, diet, and weight loss means we’ve allowed our bodies to become the center of our lives. If you are struggling in this area, ask God for wisdom (James 1:4), Join a weight loss group, talk to a friend about it! I am praying for you! Let's all get healthy together!
Yay for healthy eating!! Whoo hooo!

  1. Yay! I'm definitely going to try it! And get my hubby to try it too!! I'm sure he will have no problem as he eats pretty healthy already! I, on the other hand, LOVE ice-cream, and HATE spinach! Lol. But I'm dedicated to presenting my temple to God the way that He desires and deserves. Thanks for the boost!!

  7. HI Monica! Yes you can!! You can use strawberries, berries or any other fruit except watermelon or mango! :)

  8. hi, can i find the fruit in walmart? ie fuji apple and asian pear?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hello-- yes you can! As long as the Walmart is a super walmart! :) It's there! The sweeter the fruit, the better!

  10. Would the substitutes you previously suggested also work for an exchange of the banana? I'm not a fan of bananas.

  11. Hiya Heather,
Tried the glowing green smoothie just right now and I like it.
Waiting to see the effect on my body as the days roll by. I'll put a picture up on Twitter (@Ekweee).
Quick question though, the list of ingredients above make far more than a cup.
How much am I to drink as breakfast and also if it's just me...can I leave the rest in the fridge for the morrow? I'm figuring the lemon is a preservative..
    Thanks,
    Ekweee

  12. It's me again (Ekweee)>
One more thing, can I still drink coffee?
    ;-)

  13. lol no worries! It's good in the fridge for up to 2.5 days. Just make sure it's covered. If you freeze it--it's up to 5 days. Also, try to wean yourself off of coffee. Coffee is HORRIBLE for you & it ages you. Your body cannot identify with it. Try to switch over if you can! :)

Unhealthy eating can cause many problems, i'm 52 and all these years of unhealthy eating has caused many problems for me so i'm finally making the change! God bless...

  24. I noticed that the pictures shows that you have some honey on the counter - did you add a couple of spoonfuls to the smoothie?

    Thanks for sharing =)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hey! No-- don't use honey! :) I used raw manuka honey as a face mask & in my tea!! :)

  26. I am going to try your recipe soon. I have been buying frozen fruits and blending my smoothies. I haven't tasted a fruit that I didn't like. I have been using agave nectar to sweeten them. I purchased some Stevia and I am going to see how that taste as well.

  29. This looks good - definitely a Must Try! I have another question for you as well - I know you're great at researching vitamins and things, so I was wondering if you heard of "Prairie Naturals Organic Whey Protein Powder". I heard it's great in smoothies, and helps for weight loss & building muscular strength. Have you heard of it, and if so, any opinions on it? I'm a novice at these products but it's had great reviews and I was interested in maybe trying it in my Glowing Green Smoothie :). Thanks!

    1. Hey!! Gosh, I have NO clue! I haven't looked into that because I do a ton of running and yoga & not so much "muscluar building."

    2. Hey Heather! I wanted to ask for your advice on Yoga. I've come across some that don't get involved with Yoga because of it's roots with Hinduism. And, there are others that wouldn't get involved. I'm in love with Jesus, and I just wanted to get more understanding on this matter. Thanks!

    3. For many Christians in the West who don't understand the history behind it, yoga is simply a means of physical exercise and strengthening and improving flexibility of the muscles. However, the philosophy behind yoga is much more than physically improving oneself. It is an ancient practice derived from India, believed to be the path to spiritual growth and enlightenment.

The word "yoga" means "union," and the goal is to unite one's transitory (temporary) self with the infinite Brahman, the Hindu concept of "God." This god is not a literal being, but is an impersonal spiritual substance that is one with nature and the cosmos. This view is called "pantheism," the belief that everything is God and that reality consists only of the universe and nature. Because everything is God, the yoga philosophy makes no distinction between man and God.

Hatha yoga is the aspect of yoga which focuses on the physical body through special postures, breathing exercises, and concentration or meditation. It is a means to prepare the body for the spiritual exercises, with fewer obstacles, in order to achieve enlightenment. The practice of yoga is based on the belief that man and God are one. It is little more than self-worship disguised as a high level of spirituality.

The question becomes, is it possible for a Christian to isolate the physical aspects of yoga as simply a method of exercise, without incorporating the spirituality or philosophy behind it? Yoga originated with a blatantly anti-Christian philosophy, and that philosophy has not changed. It teaches one to focus on oneself instead of on the one true God. It encourages its participants to seek the answers to life's difficult questions within their own conscience instead of in the Word of God. It also leaves one open to deception from God's enemy, who searches for victims that he can turn away from God (1 Peter 5:8). So honestly, YES- you can STRETCH & meditate on GOD & His goodness. I do prefer Pilates though. Over everything-- go with your peace and let God lead you!

  30. I was skeptical at first but I decided to try your smoothie last night. Some evenings I dont feel like eating and this is perfect! I think I used a little too much spinach because mine was very green and not sweet at all. I just added simply OJ because I didn't want want to throw it away; it made the whole pitcher full! I also didn't remember the part about blending on low then high do mine had the weird texture. HA I'll definitely try this again using this recipe and I'll change it up a little sometimes. Thanks so much for sharing!

  33. Hi Heather! I would love to try this smoothie but I'm not sure if it would agree with my body. I find that when I eat grit and eggs, (the bad stuff) it slows me down, but when I eat fruit the sweetness gives me a bad stomach ache. Do you find this smoothie to be really sweet? This would be awesome to incorporate into my diet. I NEED more energy. Thanks so much for sharing. I thank God for your wisdom!

Thanks for sharing I'm adding this to my list to just before I go in to my full detox this in a few days. One step further on the road to returning to my fit and healthy self.

  36. Heather can this also be done using a juicer or will it mess up the consistency?

  37. Hey Heather!

Is there any substitution for the celery! I can't bare the smell or taste of celery but I still want similar nutritional and health benefits. Any suggestions?

  38. Thank you so much for this smoothie! I tried it today for the first time, and shortly after I was craving a second! I thank God for you and your blog - a woman after His own heart!

  39. Hi Heather,

What substitutions can I use for celery and avocado? They both make me gag! Also, I'm allergic to apple, would strawberries or peaches work?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes! Those both work! You cannot takes the avacado & it helps with the texture-- you can also sub those for more veggies!

  40. Does it sit well overnight? If I wanted to make it at night and grab it to go in the morning, will it mess up the consistency of it?

  41. Can we as Christians drink alcohol??? I've heard you can but dont get drunk and ive heard you cant sooo...???

    1. Hey, I encourage you to ask for your motive in wanting to drink? To forget about a rough day? To "relax" you? The bible is clear that a glass of wine every now & then is ok, but are we drinking a bottle here & there? We have to check our motives for doing what we do. If you have to question it, I would avoid it all together.

      Delete
    2. No, never to relieve stress or to relax because those motives are not good motives at all. Christ is my all and all stress reliever! I usually have a glass with my dinner every now and then (like 3-4 times a yr), i hate the tipsy feeling so i dont go over my limit anymore and I know not to get drunk as i have in the past its stupid and made me act a complete fool! I also dont like drinking around unsaved family members/friends bc some cant control themselves and I dont want to damage my witness to them.

  42. What about protein??? Do you ever add any? I have thought about juicing but was undecided. My stomach has been horribly bloated and upset lately. I'm going to try your smoothie tomorrow.

  43. Hi Heather,
I have been wanting to try your green smoothie but I have one small issue, can I substitute the bananas with anything else?
I have never willingly or knowing eat a banana, even if I can't see in if it's put into something, if I smell it I won't eat it, somehow I always can l0l, weird.
Can the banana be smelled in your green smoothie?

  47. I don't treat my body very well YET but I'm trying. I've been so used to eating junk and getting away with it it is now an AWFUL habit - plus an unhealthy addiction to sugar :( Reading your blog is such a God send. I've been sitting home all day procrastinating reading my Bible so I thought I'd swing through here to get my mind in the right frame before some Bible study tonight. God bless you! I still haven't started the Journal challenge yet :( Maybe it's not for everyone? Will try it soon by God's grace. His patience with me is amazing!
